Goodbye 4C!

It has come to the end. It has been an absolutely fantastic year and you have made it the best year I have spent in Gran Canaria.

4C - you have been fantastic and I will miss you all.

Keep checking here for information about what I'm doing in England and also remember that Edmodo will continue! :-)

Have a great summer.

Using a wiki to create a page of information

We started to use a wiki for the first time today and hopefully we can continue using it over the next two weeks for our theme based discussion work.

Here's the page that our wiki is on and remember you need to enter a user name and password to access the wiki. When you have done this, select your wiki page and then Edit to start adding text, images, sounds and video. If you want you can also create your own page.

Brain Safari

Give you brain some training in the jungle.

Build a roller coaster challenge

Okay then. Here's a challenge for the weekend and it's a fun one. You have to build a roller coaster and collect the coins to progress onto the next level. Can you complete the game? Who will get through all the levels? It's harder than you think.

Do you want to become a games designer?

I got an invite from atmosphir recently and it is a game that gives you the possibility to design your own games! It's a brilliant idea and one which we explored in class so if you too want to design and play your own games and the games created by others then you need to complete a form on the atmosphir beta program page. Please ask your parents first, and remember you will need to wait for 2 weeks before you get an invite to download the program.

Film Making time

Do you have what it takes to make a film? Do you want the whole school to sit in the theatre and watch your very own work of cinematic art? Well, over the next two weeks we will be studying film making and we will use this information to help us make our own films. You can make your own or work in a small group. You can choose a theme from
  • Documentary
  • Scary
  • Funny
  • Musical
So start thinking, get planning, draw up your story board and then get filming.

Our Voicethread about using Myst

We used VoiceThread for the first time today and we had a great time recording our comments about using Myst as a tool for learning to write more creatively in Literacy. What do you think about our VoiceThread?

Are you a DJ?

If you want to try mixing some music and creating your own MP3 then try audiomixer and see what you can do. Once you have created and mixed your own track you can save it to your pc as an MP3 but you will need to register with them to do that.

4C's global trekking

We used BigHugeLabs Mapmaker to make a map of where we have visited on Earth. We hope you like it. Why not make your own and post a link to it in the comments?
The countries highlighted red are those that children in the class have visited.

Day trip to Firgas and Arucas

Yesterday we went to Firgas for our school outing followed by a quick stop in Arucas for lunch. It was a very interesting day with lots to do even if the rain tried to spoil our plans.

We went to an old corn mill which has been completely renovated and houses a museum showing how 'Gofio' was made in the past compared to how it is being made today.

Next we went into Firgas to complete two more activities - sketching the coat of arms for different districts in Gran Canaria followed by an excellent exploring hunt discovering information about the 7 islands of the Canaries.

Spelling City helps you learn your spellings

With Spellingcity you can practise your spellings anytime you want online. It is almost like having your own teacher helping you learn your spelling words.
You type the words in the box provided or if you have lots of spelling words to learn you can type them in as a list seperating each with a comma.

Once you have finished you can be tested, taught the words or even play one of the many spelling games available on the site.

Have fun.

It has amazing images and insightful guided tours to watch and listen. We'll be using it as part of our class topic 'The Earth, Moon and the Sun', so get permission from your parents first before installing it at home.

etherpad

What a great day for our technology lesson! Etherpad was another teaching/learning tool I introduced today.

You remember what happened? Etherpad is basically a writing pad, a page online that you type text on. But what is so brilliant about it is that once you set the writing pad up you can share the URL (that's the address of the page) with other people so that they too can write on your pad!

You could write stories and assignments together, share ideas at the same time and many other uses that we will uncover in the next few weeks.

I will start a new pad during ICT on Monday afternoon.

Edmodo - an online virtual classroom

Hi everyone, I'm sure you are just as excited about Edmodo as I am. We launched our blogging platform today in school and already some of you have started using it (Maria H and Ainhoa).

I have a lot of ideas for this tool as it will no doubt become very useful over the next 8 weeks of our final term. Check it every day for updates and assignments (homework) and remember to reply and send links, files etc to either myself or 4C so that we can all use them.

This is going to be fun :)

Happy St Patrick's Day

It's St. Patrick's day in Ireland and all over the world people who are Irish and even people who think they are Irish enjoy the 'craic' and have a large party and sing songs.

So Have a happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone.

From Mr Kevin

Father's Day

Father's Day is on the 19th March in Spain so here's a simple origami tie you can make at home as a present for your Dad.

World of Goo

Sometimes you just want to relax and play a game and have some fun. So that's why I'm posting this wonderful game World of Goo.

It can only be described as a puzzle solving platform type game with goo balls.

And it's great fun.

You can download a demo of the game from this link demo of goo

And if you are really, really lucky you might even get your mum or dad to buy you the full version!

Now, go forth and get 'goo'ed.

p.s. you can also get a Wii version which is even better!

Practising spellings this week

This week's spellings are quite difficult but don't worry, there is a great game to help you learn them which you can play here on this suffixes activity.

All this week's words include suffixes which come at the end of the words.
They are
-cian
-sion
-tion
-ssion

Listening to music online

Sometimes I find little gems on sites that I just have to share and this is one. It's called Spotify and it's a brilliant little application. What it does is it lets you search for music online and listen to it immediately. It's like having your own Radio station with all your favourite songs but no dj's talking over the top. It has the support of all the major record labels so that means it is a legal service too.
You can't keep the music just listen to it but it is free!
So click on this link if you want to give it a try. Make sure you get permission first.

Enjoy the weekend.

Our new school show!

This year's school show has been decided! It is a brilliant show to perform as it is purely singing the whole way through but that means we have a lot of words to learn!

Every class has been given a song to learn so with 10 weeks left we better get started!

We will be singing 'Close every door' and you can sing along with the video link provided.

Welcome Back it's 2009

Welcome back 4C and friends. It's 2009 and we have a lot of great topics to look forward to this term. Here are just some of the exciting things we are going to explore and learn about over the next few weeks.

History - The Aztecs! Who were they, where did they come from, what did they do and what ever happened to them? Check this. And this.

Science - Solids, Liquids and Gases. We will do lots of experiments to explore each and we will also look at easy experiments we can do at home. Check this out. And this.

ICT - Using a database. What is a database? Are they useful? What can we use them for?

We will also be continuing Maths and Literacy. In Literacy we will look at poetry again and various types of writing that we can use in our own written work.

So sit back, open your minds, get your pens ready and let's get started with Term 2 :)
